The fear response starts in a region of the brain called the amygdala (the ‘emotional’ brain). The almond-shaped amygdala is located in the anterior portion of the temporal lobe, taking up less than 1% of the volume of the human brain. So tiny, yet so powerful! It is that part, which helps you take in and respond to emotions. When fear arises or where danger is perceived, the amygdala immediately presses the panic button, ensuring to keep you safe. The system works particularly fast and the processing is completely subconscious.
Fear isn’t just in your head. Your brain releases biological molecules that
- Increase your heart rate and blood pressure
- Accelerate your breathing
- Increase sweating
- Slow your digestive system
- Dilate your pupils
These are all necessary when the fear is real. Increased heart rate and blood pressure means more blood can get to your muscles, getting you prepared to fight or run. Faster breathing ensures your body is getting plenty of oxygen. Slowing the digestive system allows the body to focus on what is important in the moment – to fight or flight, whichever one you end up choosing.
It, however, becomes a concern when the amygdala is overactive. People with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) show greater activation as well as people with anxiety disorders, panic disorders or chronic stress. The overactive fear and anxiety circuit in your brain reduces the functioning of other areas of the brain that help with inhibition of fear. Furthermore, the amygdala shuts down the neutral pathway to your prefrontal cortex, limiting your ability to see other perspectives, impacting your decision making and reducing your memory function. Physically, the body is flooded with adrenaline and all non-essential functions stop running at full strength. When these systems are not working properly for extended periods of time, health issues often occur.
Is your amygdala running the show? There are ways of regulating your nervous system. Both Kinesiology and EFT Tapping are highly effective to shut down the fight and flight response and turn off the amygdala, sending a signal to the body letting it know that it is safe. This will support your system returning to normal functioning and good health and wellbeing is maintained.
