What form of therapy is Kinesiology?

Kinesiology is a recognised natural, holistic therapy that can work alongside other physical treatments. It uses muscle monitoring (biofeedback) to identify imbalances that may be causing disease in the body. Kinesiology is NOT used to diagnose medical disorders, treat, prescribe or cure symptoms or stress. The re-balancing of the body promotes its natural healing processes, resulting in improved health and wellbeing on a physical, mental, emotional, energetic and spiritual level. It aims to build new habits and thought patterns that serve to live your best life.

Is Kinesiology safe?

Yes, Kinesiology is gentle, safe, non-invasive and effective, appropriate for all ages.

What can I expect to happen during a session?

In our initial session (also called balance) we will go through a detailed intake form where we take a medical history and analyse your chief complaint and your presenting symptoms. This is followed by client-centred counselling to understand more about your chief complaint and what is behind it. We may establish a goal for the session or work with a physical issue. Most of the work takes place on a massage table. Your Kinesiologist uses muscle monitoring (a gentle push/touch on your arm) in combination with acupressure points (without needles) and body palpation to determine where there are imbalances and stress held in the body and energetic system. Stress could be of structural, biochemical, psychological and energetic nature. We often uncover self-limiting beliefs and unprocessed emotions or deep-seated childhood patterns. Using a variety of tools, we will diffuse the stress and blockages, restoring balance required for optimal health. The session will conclude with a summary of what we achieved and some home reinforcement, which may include but not limited to required lifestyle changes, holding an acupressure point, repeating affirmations, breathing exercises, meditating, journaling and others.

How long does a session take?

Sessions take up to 90 minutes (adults) and 60 minutes for kids.


How many sessions will I need?

Each person and each situation is different and unique to the individual. Depending on your issue, you may achieve the results you are after in one session. However, in most cases multiple sessions are required to unpack and address the cause. We generally suggest follow up sessions 2-3 weeks apart and offer a 5 session package option for follow up sessions. Many clients continue to come in every 4-6 weeks to maintain their health and wellbeing.

What do I need to wear to my appointment?

For most of the session you will be on a massage table fully dressed with your shoes off. You may wish to wear comfortable clothing such as pants or shorts, which allows for flexible movement.

Do I need to bring anything to my appointment?

There is no need to bring anything, however, if you do have any medical conditions, it may be useful to view reports of recent diagnostic tests undertaken and understand any medication and/or supplements you are on.

How does a distance session work?

There are 2 options available. We have a phone conversation first to discuss your goal or issue and then your Kinesiologist will work on you remotely. There is no need for you to be present during the session. This is usually the preferred option when working with people from overseas due to time zone differences. The other option is to work together online. Inner West Kinesiology will send you a link to a secure video call and the session will be similar to one held face to face in clinic. Instead of using your muscle, your Kinesiologist will tap into your energy and will surrogate for you by using self muscle monitoring to find context and clear any imbalances.

Distance sessions are more suited to mental, emotional and spiritual work and are just as effective as in-person sessions. To maximise benefits, please ensure you are free from distractions and can commit to the entire session duration.

What is surrogating?

By using a surrogate, we can perform a session on someone who is either not in the room or is in the room but is unable to give us information through their muscles. We use surrogates when we want to work on a baby or a young child or when someone is too sick to hold their muscles, or is in too much pain to receive pressure.

How will I feel after a kinesiology session?

Many clients report having some after-effects from a Kinesiology session. These are just a result of the body re-organising its energy systems and integrating the healing process and none of them should be of concern.

Some common symptoms and states of being include but are not limited to:

  • A sense of peace and calm

  • Increased energy and vitality

  • Deeper and more restful sleep

  • Improvement in mobility and posture

  • Alternating energy highs and lows

  • Emotional highs and lows

  • Extreme sleepiness

  • Feeling dizzy, light-headed or ’spacey’

  • Unexplained crying or anger or whatever emotion was being dealt with in the session

It is possible to feel worse before you feel better. Though often unpleasant, this healing crisis is a sign that something is working. This kind of response doesn’t tend to last very long. It will often just be for 24 hours, or for a couple of days. Once that shifts, usually you will feel a lot better. Please do reach out if you have any concerns after a session.

Who are your clients?

People of all age groups, and all different backgrounds, find Kinesiology valuable. The two most common reasons people will come for a session are:

  • they feel stressed and anxious. Stress affects our ability to think, to be healthy and to function at our best.

  • to get help with a physical issue (think tight shoulders and neck, chronic back pain, digestive disorders etc.)

While many Kinesiologists are generalists and will see clients with a wide range of issues, Inner West Kinesiology specialises in supporting people reducing stress and pain, improving mental and emotional wellbeing, self-care, relationships, self-esteem and confidence.

What are your opening hours?

Our hours are as follows (by appointment only):

Monday to Saturday: 9am-6pm

If you can’t find a suitable time in the booking system or require after hours service, please contact us to accommodate you and arrange an appointment.

Do private health insurance rebates apply?

From 1 April 2019, there were changes to the way that natural therapies were covered by private health insurance. This means that from this date Kinesiology, along with fifteen other natural therapies, is no longer being covered by private health insurance.

What payment method do you accept?

Inner West Kinesiology accepts Visa, MasterCard and American Express, as well as bank-issued EFTPOS chip cards. For sessions in clinic, payment can be made at the end of the session. For online sessions, payment is to be completed prior to the session taking place.
We are environmentally friendly and will email invoices and receipts.

What if I cannot attend an appointment?

Inner West Kinesiology will send a SMS reminder 72 hours prior to your appointment. We ask that you reconfirm or change your booking if you can no longer attend. Any cancellation of a session within 24 hours will incur a 50% cancellation fee. If you fail to turn up to your appointment or cancel within 3 hours of your scheduled appointment time you will incur the full amount of the consultation.

What is your Health and safety protocol?

We would like to assure you that we follow a strict hygiene protocol. There is a 30 minutes gap between appointments to allow for clearing the space, disinfecting the massage table, common surfaces and tools we use in clinic. Towels are changed after each client. Hand sanitiser is readily available and face masks are handed out upon request. We ask that you inform us and don’t attend our clinic if you do not feel well and experience any cold and flu symptoms.
